Imagine trying to solve every workplace problem with the same response.

More training.

Another meeting.

A new policy.

Sometimes that response works. Sometimes the problem requires something completely different.

Ashby’s Law of Requisite Variety says:

The more varied the challenge, the more varied our response must be.

Complicated environments contain different people, causes, pressures, and circumstances. One rigid leadership approach cannot handle every possible situation well.

Effective leaders need more than one tool. They listen, adapt, involve different perspectives, and change their response when the conditions change.

Consistency matters.

But consistency is not the same thing as responding identically to everything.

Even a good hammer eventually meets something that is not a nail.
